December 2005
December 1

"California Redwoods" Starting off the month of December with a new painting in a new format--this is shown life size at three inches wide and seven inches tall. The California Redwoods are magical places, and the flow and movement of the branches is pure poetry. Original oil, oddly sized at 7 x 3 inches.

December 2

"Golden White" (cat) 4 x 4 inch original oil on canvas, I painted this from material I have had in the files--photos from ages ago. This is hardly the same image!

December 3

"OTI" This is a gallery-sized painting. OTI means "owner turned in" and is a common notation on many dog's intake cards at the animal shelter. This young terrier mix may find a new home, but with so many animals needing adoption, the future for others is bleak. I recently adopted a cat from our shelter, and this dog would have come home with me, too, but for our other dogs. Not available for sale at this time. Original oil on linen, 16 x 12 inches.

December 4

"Take Me, Please?" The second in the series of animal shelter dogs, which so profoundly affected me when I adopted my new cat. Another gallery-sized painting with a target for the show season in 2006. Original oil on linen, 16 x 12 inches. Not available for purchase at this time.

December 5

"Tiny Roberts" My last two shelter paintings brought to me a very sad story about this five pound rescue who was much loved by his adopted family until a tragic accident took him away. I am delighted to bring his spirit back through this small image. Original oil on board-backed canvas, 10 x 8 inches.

December 6

"Legs" Today's painting is a controlled value painting to showcase the legs of these creatures--both horse and human. Original 9 x 12 oil on board, from material secured at the Draft Horse Classic. US $ 400 and was displayed at the Draft Horse Classic Art Show.

December 7

"Brie" Back to some interesting holiday foods as the month progresses. This original oil on canvas is 5 x 7 inches.

December 8

"Apple #4" What goes better with the Brie of yesterday than a ripe Braeburn organic apple? Original oil, 4 x 6 inches on gallery-wrap canvas.

December 9

"Quick Study for Color Reference, Landscape" This is just a 4 x 6 oil of a color study for a possible larger landscape. Oops! Forgot to sign it. If it is sold, there will be my signature on the lower left corner.

December 10

"Two Palms" A Saturday night and these two palms are just spending time together. Original oil 4 x 5 inches. Available for $85.00

December 11

"Thanks, but I'll Wait" Third in the series on shelter pets, this Basset hound is tough to place, however, since he appears to be purebred, I'm sure a rescue organization will come and pick him up. He wouldn't look at me, but rather seemed to have his eyes focused on the distant wish that the owner who turned him in will return, so he waits. Original oil on board, 16 x 12 inches, scheduled for either the Art Show at the Dog Show and/or for a future calendar featuring paintings of animal shelter pets. Not for sale at this time.

December 12

"Snapshot" From ancestors to now, it is all encompassed in this original oil, 5 x 7 inches. The photograph in sepia tone is from my grandmother's things--she received a Brownie camera in 1903 and never stopped photographing. I have hundreds of her photographs. And the color picture was from a recent Christmas. Finishing up the composition, this filbert brush is my favorite artist's working tool. $85

December 13

"Junk Man" I have wanted to paint this fellow and his valued possessions since I took the reference shots way back in the 1980s. Imagine having a painting stick in one's head until one's ability catches up to the task. I paint this one today in honor of all the new friends I have made because of the kind generosity of Robert Genn in his latest newsletter. There is some really sly symbolic humor poking fun at myself in it as well. Original oil on stretched canvas, 24 x 30 inches. For sale for $875 directly from the artist.

December 14

"Tangerine" From big to small, here's a nice 4 x 6 image on gallery wrap (no framing needed) of a tangerine I painted, and then ate! This is the time of year for these tasty morsels, and the seedless types are my favorite.

December 15

"Lunch Break #2" This is a quick color study for a possible larger painting of horses that were tied up on a trail ride up in the desert canyons near Palm Springs. Lunch time, and the riders are off eating, while the horses wait, enjoying the rest after the hours on the trail. No place to go if they did get loose. Original oil, 6 x 6 inches on gallery-wrap canvas. Yes, the right hand horse is painted around the edge! $220

December 16

"Morning Fog" I knew what I was going to paint today the moment I saw it. This is our windmill in the early morning fog of a California December. Even though I didn't set brush to this 5 x 7 gallery-wrap canvas until 9 pm tonight, I knew this was the image I would paint today. I love this windmill. It provides much of our water, and when it was first installed, I painted it--REALLY painted it. You can see that image here, from the same window, in evening light.

December 17

"Who, Me?" We have a new "teenage" kitten in the house, named "Pesto", and she gives you this ... this LOOK, as if to say, "Sure, you think I did it. Not me." Although her calico colors are not quite like this cat's, the spirit of innocense and mischief in her eyes is right on accurate. Original oil on gallery-wrap canvas, 6 x 4 inches.

December 18

"Pesto Posing" This painting is 6 x 8 inches, and is an oil, with a totally different "feel" from yesterday's image. Taking more time, and with studied concentration to capture that foreshortened paw, Pesto is shown lounging on my studio chair. Do I get to sit down? No.... Available through Paypal for $195

December 19

"Peaceful Evening Sunset" I looked out the window of my studio at the evening light, the coming sundown, and the soft, pastel colors on the whispy clouds to the northwest, and this painting just slid off my brushes onto a 4 x 6 canvas. Yes, the mountains are truly yellow ochre until the winter rains come.

to Juliet Harrison of Red Hook, New York

December 20

"Sebastian" My cat paintings generated this commission from the family of one of my collectors. Combining several reference photographs, this portrait of a beloved pet comes off the easel at 8 x 10 inches.

to the collection of Kim Darby in Florida.

December 21

"The Rock Pickers" Many years ago, I traveled with some friends to Baja California. These two friends were developing a very special relationship together, and passed many hours on our four-day trip talking and collecting rocks on the beach south of Ensenada. I lost touch with them when they moved to Washington. Original oil on board, 8 x 10 inches. $100

December 22

"Greek Harbor" Water showing up again in a painting for today--must be wishing for the beginnin gof our winter rains? Ah well, the clear water of the Greek Islands is still in my memory from my honeymoon! Only available here, at least until after December 26. Original oil, 8 x 10 inches.

December 23

"Evening Light" Although only 4 x 6 inches, this little painting is just bursting with color. Evening light in the western mountains. Gallery wrapped, with the painting going around all sides, this is the late night painting for two days before Christmas.

December 24

"Peace on Earth" On the night before Christmas, oil, 7 x 5 inches. Only available from this site. $100

December 25

December 27

"Small Painting, Buffalo Bull" I thought I would go into the studio late and just fiddle fool around with a simple landscape--nope. Went through some reference shots from Hart Park, and this bull came off the brushes. I put him back on the prairie he's never known. Original oil, 4 x 6 inches.

December 28

"On the Road to Tripoli" Looking through some of my reference material, I came across this photograph taken by my uncle, who was stationed in Arabia during World War II. His notation on the back of this photograph says, "This old Arab didn't mind having his picture taken. Between Homs and Tripoli. It was sure a hot day!" The photo graph is about 2 x 3.5 inches. The painting is 6 x 4 inches. My uncle is gone now, but I have many of his effects. I hope you like my painting today.

to Raminder Randhawa of Chicago, Illinois.

December 29

"Two of the Kids" I have had milk goats for years, and these two youngsters came in the spring--a reawakening of new life, reminding me that the new year is just around the corner. Oil on panel, 5 x 7 inches.

December 30

"Little Thief" I have been camping in places where these raccoons are so bold, they come out during daylight to raid your campsite. This fellow was so bold, I had to keep backing up to even get him in the picture. Throwing down some bits of bread stopped him. Oil on board-backed canvas, 9 x 12 inches, available for $220.

December 31

"Happy New Year!" Some times I don't know what I'm going to paint, but tonight, what else could I do? I know that all over the world, people are celebrating the arrival of 2006. This painting came out of my head from memories of fireworks from many days of yore. May all of us have a peaceful and joyful new year! Original oil, 7 x 5 inches. $100
