Florals and Flower Paintings

These original works feature flowers as the major subject matter. Still life paintings (many also with flowers) can be found here.

"Salmon Roses" Remember my mention of the roses brought to me by my beloved spouse of ten years? Of course I needed to paint them! Picking subjects that are near and dear to one's heart is a good start for a good painting. One must remember, though, that the painting and the subject are not as important as the learning that takes place when you do the creating! Many times artists put 'way too much of themselves into a work, erroneously measuring their total success against the success of that one painting. Bad idea. If the painting doesn't work out, learn from it and move on (and paint it out at the first opportunity!)
So paint with joy, and choose meaningful subjects to create. Just remember that the end product ought only be a stepping stone on your progress as an artist. 12x9 Acrylic US $ 200.00 Contact Elin or
"Peony" Slipping back into acrylics for a while, I decided that the palette knife and a peony needed to meet up on a five by five canvas. I love these flowers, having seen them as a child growing up back east. They are sensous, fragrant and seem to contain a gentle spirit within. The palette knife was fun, quick and allows for some very interesting edges! The colors are much more luminous than the image, but it still brings me pleasure. 5x5 Acrylic US $ 100.00 Contact Elin or

My sister came over to visit for a few hours, and we organized the larger space that will host shows and students. In doing so, sorting the flowers into color groups for display and still life setups was part of the journey. I now have nice vases of reds, yellows, and greens, and this white pitcher of white flowers! It seemed like a fun thing to do to set it up on a sculpting stand and paint it--so here is the 12 x 12 inch oil for your pleasure today! $250

"A Rose is A Rose" Out to the garden after a wonderful dinner with my sister and brother and spouses, brother is a gourmet cook and does amazing things with food.  So the plans move forward on Mom's memorial, and we enjoyed a wonderful, laughter-filled evening.  Earlier today I had noticed one of my beloved Grenada roses coming into bud, and so when we returned home, I cut it and have painted it for you on this 6 x 4 oil.  Interesting, in painting it, I wanted to really push the paint and put a lot more paint on the surface, but I haven't broken through to that level yet.  I will, though.
As artists, we are constantly (ought to be anyway) testing our limits of expression.  We ought never to paint the same thing twice.  I look at work I did years ago, and see tremendous growth and change (sometimes, "Egad, did I really paint that...um... ulp!").  The more you create, the more depth can get into your work.  Even when I lift brushes this late at night, I never forget that each work is a stepping stone to new ways to express my vision.

"Easter Lily" On Wednesday, when I went to the San Diego Museum of Art, I saw three original Georgia O'Keeffe paintings. Her detailed brushmarks were a powerful message for the abstracted florals on the wall. Since Easter is Sunday, and since I have one of my commissions out of the way, I thought I would detour into this lovely blossom from one of the bouquets. Original 6 x 6 inch oil. $100

Ever get a spring cold?  I've got one now, and it's slowed me down a bit.  Couldn't get the commissions finished, so I gently lifted out a lovely tulip from a bouquet and put it in this bud vase.  Of course I went to Balboa Park today, and walked through the botanical gardens--perhaps that's why this tulip whispered, "Paint me tonight".  In any case, I hope you'll enjoy the intensity of color against many different grays, showing that, to make a painting sing, contrast is one good way to do it.
Original oil, 7 x 5 inches on gallery-wrap (no framing needed).  $100

"Flower Joy" Almost square at 15.5 x 16 inches, this is a nice painting full of the joy of flowers in a bouquet, with a pear (oh, those pears!) and some odds and ends. This actually started out as a monochrome painting (one color plus black and white) but I used color to put that final layer on. Very loose handling of paint, too! $300

"Friend's Roses" Returning to the studio laden with the generosity for which she is well known, Joan knew I had planned to paint roses, and in she comes with these wonderful yellowy cream blossoms.
The original oil is 20 x 16, and was done from a small set up with the roses in a vase that my folks received as a wedding gift back in 1942. I will always look at them seeing more than just the colors and brush strokes, and even though they may leave my life to adorn the walls of a collector's home, I still know a part of me is in the painting. $300

"Rose #3" The first rose, a few days later, in full bloom. Different tape tho'. Original oil on canvas 7 x 5 inches. US $100 Contact Elin or

"Brass and Green" "It is so nifty when I'm able to successfully render the look of brass in a still life." And the greyed greens of the ceramics just add to the lushness of this scene. Original oil on canvas, 24 x 20 inches, US $475 Contact Elin or

"A Pitcher for Bats"  Here is one of the artist's many cats, who tends to invade whatever still life is up, especially during the colder months of the year.  This painting has been selected by Hasbro, Inc. for use on their Picture Perfect Puzzles, sold during 2002.  The light creates a warm spot, and "Bats the Cat" is a heat magnet.  Update! Hasbro again uses this painting for their "Roll and Go" Puzzle Carrier ! Original oil painting, 24 x 30 inches, unframed price. US$ 1,250 Contact Elin or
