Check for the newest work on Elin's New Work page (upper left corner of this page.

"A Bit of a Worry" is now finished. As you can see from yesterday's progress, my time today was spent in adding more details to the areas where I want your eye to linger, and finishing up the loose painterly aspects of the balance of the surface. By this time, the decisions are far more important than those of the first few passes, and how much detail to pull out is crucial. The lessons of learning what to detail up, and what to leave loosely tendered can consume an entire life! I tend to leave a lot of quasi-unfinished areas, that still support he design without taking your eye away form the story. If you squint your eyes at this finished piece and then go back to look at the black and white structure I sent, you'll discover I strayed hardly at all from that design.

Now we have a painting of the backstretch of Del Mar, and one of the daily routines that go on behind the races. Original oil, 12 x 12 inches, US $500 Contact Elin or

"Cross Country" This six by six inch canvas is a quick painting of a really quick horse--one of the competitors in the three-day event in Kentucky (and other places, including our local Galway Downs).  Horse and riders compete in three disciplines for three days, doing dressage (tightly controlled movements), cross country (flat out racing with HUGE obstacles) and then show jumping in an arena with time and perfection being the goal.  It is an incredible experience to be beside the marked track and have one of these magnificent pairs go thundering by!  I may tweak this one a bit more once the initial lay in hardens a bit.  You can always check back on the site to see some that have been "polished". Available for $175 Contact Elin or

"Skoal" Amazing what you can do when there are four guys scraping your ceilings and tons of noise are coming from your home. The house smells like wet laundry, the ceilings are beautiful, stuff isn't back where it belongs yet, but I had a lot of fun focusing on the back pocket of this shoer. This is a 12 x 16 oil on linen, and is from the San Juan Capistrano arena, where they held a major show a while back. The painting is also known as "Quick Repair" $500

"Pacing the Hounds" This was an acrylic I started as a demo for the acrylic workshop in Kentucky, but didn't get enough time to finish it. So here it is today, in al almost finished state. I will detail out more on the horse at a later time, but this is the "feel" I wanted to get from the start. I had a wonderful ride today on Raindance (my mare) and it was an overcast day, just like this one. I like the feeling of "lift" on the horse and rider. Of course, the color is a great red-orange/blue-green complementary. Original acrylic, 9 x 12 inches $350

"Misty Hunt"  It is so much "fun" to pack. Truly an adventure of discovery! I'm finding in my archives some paintings not on the web site--some starts that I never finished, and some I think are candidates for frisbee championships! (That means they'll go some distance before hitting the dirt of the pasture!)  Today's painting is one I started as a demonstration painting in Kentucky a year or so ago, during a workshop. I was asked to depict mist using my color system.  It came back with me, unfinished, a 9 x 12, and never saw the light of day after that.  Today, as I was packing a box of 9 x 12s, it popped up and said, "I'm ready to be finished now."
So here he is, the mist and the hounds, two riders, and trees.  $375 unframed. Contact Elin or

"Near the Art Studio, KHP" The horse in the pasture I think is Cigar, in a painting done as a demonstration during one of my AAEA Kentucky workshops. Nothing like those beautiful clouds in Kentucky! Original oil on canvas panel, 16 x 20 inches US $ 625 Contact Elin or

"Color Study, Del Mar" I spent some time now that I'm home, in the studio looking over some sales catelogues from Sotheby's from some time ago. They auctioned off a few Sir Alfred Munnings' paintings, and I enjoyed seeing how he manipulated a brush. This little 6 x 4 painting resulted in the wee hours of the night, to put into practice what came through my eyes earlier in the day. The essence of the subject, with rich brushmarks. This source was a photo I took at Del Mar last summer. One of the things I was working toward is the thick aplication of paint, without overworking any area. Now I'm off to sleep, with a full plate this week and many more daily paintings about which to dream! Original oil, shown actual size of 6 x 4 inches $100 from the artist. Contact Elin or
"Buckets" An acrylic painting full of the light of a morning wash up at Del Mar Race Track. I love painting buckets! All the stuff that washing horses entails is such fun to paint, and of course the blues and oranges surely don't hurt. Original acrylic on board, 9 x 12 inches, US $450 Contact Elin or

"Legs" Today's painting is a controlled value painting to showcase the legs of these creatures--both horse and human. Original 9 x 12 oil on board, from material secured at the Draft Horse Classic. US $ 425 Contact Elin or .

"Silver Dreams, Golden Autumn" This is a commissioned painting for the cover of a book called "Silver Dreams" and I was painting it to very exacting requirements. Fortunately the author and publisher were very pleased with the end result. Only the image was licensed, I still have the original 20 x 16 oil painting, available for US $ 500 Contact Elin or .

"To the Ring" In Elin's new DVD giving instruction on how to paint noon light, this white horse bound for the exhibition arena gives the artist an opportunity to show how to paint white objects with all their reflections, and also to depict overhead light correctly. Original oil on board, 12 x 16, exhibited in the Animals in Art show at the Louisiana Veterinary College. $600 Contact Elin or

"Hi-Tech Horse #2" this is a beautiful piece of drawing combined with acrylic paints and handmade paper with a complimentary color scheme depicting a rider bedecked with cell phone and beeper, ready to enter the ring for a schooling show.  Original painting, 12 x 9 inches. US $200 Contact Elin or

"Rolex Rush" During Rolex, the horses and riders race against the clock to get as close as possible to the optimal time for completing the course. One of the riders is shown here making up time. They grease the legs of the horses to allow them to slip over the jumps in case of a close call. Original acrylic on canvas, 12 x 16 inches, US $ 700 Contact Elin or
"Backlit White Hunter" During Rolex, many volunteers on horseback would blow whistles as the riders approached their area of the course. This rider was beautifully back-lit on her gray/white horse. Original oil on board, 12 x 12 inches US$600 Contact Elin or
"Redcoat, Before the Jump Off" The first of the paintings for the Walter Foster book, and also the COVER! For the chapter outlining how Elin paints white horses, this acrylic painting has the wonderful color and glow--but in acrylic! An original measuring 12 x 9 inches, it can be yours for US $ 850 Contact Elin or

"Washing Sox with Mr. Red Shirt" The second in the series of thirteen paintings going into the Walter Foster book on painting horses using acrylics, this is for the chapter of on-location painting. Original acrylic, 9 x 12 inches, US $850 Contact the artist.
"Cinch Work" After I was accepted into the American Academy of Equine Art, my horse paintings have focused more closely on accurate anatomy.  But I can also paint a decent human figure, showing that well in this work.  I spent a morning around the big show hunters in Indio, and this painting resulted from those hours.  Original Oil on Canvas, 16 x 20 inches US$440 Contact Elin or
"Snow Run" More horses!  And backlit it is, with beautiful light as I paint hunt scenes, with the rider and hounds traversing the landscape on this brisk snowy morning!  Original oil on canvas, 16 x 20 inches US $ 650 Contact Elin or
"Before the America's Cup" Elin took many reference shots at the America's Cup of Jumping in San Juan Capistrano last summer.  Here is the first of several paintings that result from these sessions of real life horse work.  Original Oil on canvas, 16 x 20 inches US $575 Contact Elin or
"Snow Serenade"    Here's a horse that's feeling the joy and pleasure of being let out to run after a snowfall.  All four feet are lifted off the snow in that fleeting moment of the gallop.  This painting has a beautiful back light, glowing through the snow and on the horse.  Original oil, 30 x 40 inches. US$ 2150 Contact Elin or
"Baby Paint" When the folks over at Walter Foster saw my "Baby Bay" painting, they asked if I could do one in acrylics, and make it a paint, to show how I paint foals. Not a problem! Here's the 12 x 12 acrylic that will be published in January 2005 showing this coloration in a tri-color bay pinto! Original acrylic, US $ 700 Contact Elin or
"Looking Back, Mare and Foal" For the book on painting Horses in Acrylics (due out January 2005), Elin painted this 12 x 16 image of a mare and her foal to show the size relationships between them. Original acrylic, US $ 450 Contact Elin or
"Spring Run" While at the La Quinta Desert Plein Air event in Indian Wells, Elin painted this scene while sitting at the booth show during a relatively quiet moment. Original acrylic on board, 9 x 12 inches, US $450 Contact Elin or
"Abstraction #1"  Taking acrylic paint in new directions, Elin created this abstract horse using interference and metallic acrylics.  Original acrylic on Stonehenge paper, 22 x 31 inches, US $320 Contact Elin or
"Better Late Than Never - A Small Miracle"  Again Elin is working with acrylics on Stonehenge paper, usually reserved for the silkscreen market.  An amazing paper that seems to have a mind of its own, Elin likens the experience of working with it to training a young horse.   Here is a mare that has given birth to a foal well into the autumn, outside of the normal season.  But an aged mare giving birth at all is a small miracle.  Thus the title.  Original acrylic on Stonehenge paper, 11 x 20 US $440 Contact Elin or
