The Red Mile Racing Scene - Paintings with the Spirit of the Industry

The Red Mile Racetrack and Tattersall's Sales Arena are the historic race course for harness horses in Lexington, and Elin paints the spirit of this course for the annual Harness Tracks of America auction in October of each year. Below are m entries for this year.

"Greased Lightning" The second in the paintings I am doing for the Harness Tracks of American auction. This year I'm sendng three 12 x 16 oils, and all three will be similar. I'm not sure why, but I enjoy painting skies and horses! Original oil on canvas, 12 x 16 inches. Available only through their web site this fall.
"Spirit of the Sport" Every year I paint at least two originals for the Harness Tracks of America Auction ( harnesstracks.com ) to assist in both the development of my equine art and also to support a worthy cause. Although harness racing is not a sport I can even see where I live, I do have many reference photos from my time at the Red Mile in Lexington. This non-traditional realistic painting I hope will raise good funds for their cause. Original oil on canvas, 12 x 16 inches. Available only through their web site or the auction this fall.
"Foggy Workout" The third in the series for the Harness Tracks of America auction (due date mid June for image submission).  This is a 9 x 12 exercise in depicting a foggy and mist-shrouded day.  Now, getting the values believable is the biggest challenge in painting overcast days, so that when you look at it, you say, "Yes, it must be overcast."  One has to deal with a narrower middle range of values (light to dark) to get it right.  And all colors are muted as well.  The source-horse for this one was brightly lit in sunshine, so in addition to getting the atmospheric feeling in the background, I had to make sure the horse wasn't screaming "SUNLIGHT".  Fun to do, of course.  A puzzle to solve!
The Red Mile - Morning Workout Harness Tracks of America Auction entry. Elin spent one morning drinking in the spirit of this famous harness horse track in Lexington, and applies her color knowledge to bring to life the first of several paintings depicting the harness horse world. Original oil on board-backed canvas, 16 x 12 inches.
Rounding the Turn, Red Mile, Lexington One of the three paintings for the Harness Tracks Auction this fall (2005). It shows the old stable and the color of the dirt in the morning light. Not for sale from my web site, only through the active bidding (can be done on line) at the HTA site.
Joy Ride! (at the Red Mile) Auction number 68. When I was standing in the in field area (in the center of the Red Mile), watching the morning workouts, I wondered how many kids had disobeyed their parents and taken a horse out for a moonlight joy ride. I know I would have been one of them! So this painting was created in homage to all the children who have ridden or driven horses without permission. Original oil, 12 x 16 inches, scheduled for the Harness Tracks of America auction. See the auction page here.
The Red Barrel at the Red Mile For the third year, I'm painting pieces for the Harness Tracks of America Auction at Tattersall's near the Red Mile Race Track in Lexington, Kentucky. This is the first of three I'm doing specifically for this venue. Original oil, 9 x 12 inches. For sale only through the HTA Auction.
Purple at the Red Mile This is one of three paintings I will be shipping to the Harness Tracks of America Auction this fall. Small and full of color, it will be auctioned off to rapid bidding. Original Oil on canvas on board. Not for sale through the web site, sorry.

Red Mile Workout This paintings was done as part of the series scheduled for submission to the Harness Tracks of America auction this coming fall. A small painting, only 9 x 12, it depicts the famous Red Mile track in Lexington, and the entry way where horses come up from the barns (one of which you can see below the horse's front hooves). To be Auctioned, not available for sale through Elin's site. See the Auction page here.

Please go to the Harness Tracks of America site for auction information and bidding.

The paintings from last year's auction sold for a record price, increasing the overall value of Elin's paintings.
